Oral Thrush

Joette Calabrese

Yes. There can be too much of a good thing.

A certain amount of the fungus Candida albicans normally inhabits our mouths. It serves a purpose — to help with digestion. However, when an overgrowth of Candida occurs, oral thrush appears!

This overgrowth can happen because of a diet too laden with sugars, a suppressed immune system, or as a side effect of medication, particularly from antibiotics.

(Go on! Antibiotics can cause this?)

Oral thrush may cause a variety of symptoms. Sometimes, it can go completely unnoticed.

Other times, one might experience white lesions on the tongue, gums, inner cheeks or throat, cracking or bleeding of the corners of the mouth, heavy salivation, difficulty swallowing and, occasionally, even a loss of taste.

It can occur in anyone but often feels most distressing when it occurs in babies.

We moms hate to see our tiny ones suffer.

A baby with oral thrush will fuss and cry when attempting to nurse and not be fully nourished because of the difficulty.

Sadly, they may end up passing the oral thrush onto their mother’s nipples as well. And then the thrush may continue to be passed back and forth between them in a never-ending, uncomfortable, unpleasant cycle.

Borax 6 should be the first medicine that comes to mind for oral thrush, especially when it’s accompanied by excessive salivation.

It matters not whether the sufferer is an older person with oral thrush from immune disfunction, a baby with oral thrush, or even a new mother who contracts thrush on her nipples by nursing her affected infant.

No matter the underlying cause, we address the condition as defined by the diagnosis and the symptoms.

Several homeopathic remedies are effective against Candida overgrowth. In fact, I’ve written about other effective choices in Vaginal Yeast Gone with Homeopathy. But specifically for oral thrush, consider Borax 6, directly in the mouth twice daily.

And of course, as it is with all homeopathic medicines, we stop when the condition is very much better.

Conventional medicine offers antifungal drugs that carry with them unnecessary side effects.

Why replace your thrush with diarrhea, abdominal pain, or kidney or liver damage? Homeopathy offers a solution to oral thrush by working to politely nudge your body into gently making the needed corrections — with no side effects.

There’s no contest between the two! So, be sure to have a bottle of Borax in your remedy kit just in case accessibility to homeopathics changes.

And be sure to pass on the good news of homeopathy!

Warmly,

Joette Calabrese

P.S. I’ve received quite a few queries in the past regarding systemic yeast overgrowth. You may desire to delve deeper, so I direct you to my course, Good Gut, Bad Gut, as gut health is a significant contributor to fungal population control. However, others of you may be more concerned about yeast overgrowth on the skin (often in reproductive areas of men and women). In that case, you may benefit from my course, Skin, the Ugly Truth.

And remember — all of my Mighties (Joette’s Mighty Members) qualify for a 10% discount on course purchases. If you need assistance getting your discount, email contact@practicalhomeopathy.com for more information.

  1. If someone has mild thrush how often would you think they might need to take borax 6 a day and for how many days? If their thrush clears up they would need to stop taking the borax is my understanding.

  2. I have trigger finger on left index, ring finger, + right ring finger, with burning pain in metacarpel bones. Pl. suggest
    Thanks.

  3. Would you use Borax 6x or 6c? Also, would this also be recommended for a fungal infection on the skin? Thank you in advance!

I don’t include whether c or x is specifically used because depending on where the reader hails, one or the other may not be available. Generally, I use c.
It’s not my 1st choice for fungal infections on the skin. These medicines are usually organ-specific, not microorganism-specific.
Should you be interested, I delve deeply into the skin protocols in my online course titled “Skin the Ugly Truth”.

      1. Thank you very much for the clarification. And thank you even more for all you do to educate all of us!! God Bless 🙂

You may use whatever potency you like but if you hope to experience what I witness you might want to use the medicine as I teach it.
The number of pills that comprise a dose is indicated on the side of the bottle.

Hello Joette! Boy how we love you and so do the groups I lead!! Would you suggest this remedy for the mama, as well, with thrush on the nipples? I am reading that it is for oral thrush specifically. Much thanks!

  6. Thoughts on taking sepia 30c 2x/day for oral thrush and ring worm on the skin?

Would borax also benefit ring worm on the skin? Or would you take two separate remedies?

Our medicines often have sweeping abilities. The goal is to use a homeopathic that covers more than one condition simultaneously.

  7. I’ve had pleurisy, and I have mild asthma, so I’ve had to take my inhaler daily for two months. My tongue is white now. No itching or burning, but I feel like I need to clear my throat constantly to rid of mucus that doesn’t seem to be there. My throat towards the back and down feels a bit burning. Maybe gerd. I’m wondering if borax or merc sol would better address this. Thank you!

  8. Hello, I have a baby with oral thrush. The post doesn’t say how often to give the medicine, nor do the comments. Would you please comment? Thanks so much.

  9. And there it is! I’m sorry to be that person– and thank you for your response. I anticipated it would be either 2x or 3x daily so began the Borax as soon as it arrived, it was late afternoon, I gave one dose. By this morning I already saw improvement as the tongue had been completely thickly coated with the white plaque, and this morning was only speckled.
    Yay for homeopathy!

  10. I was hoping you’d touch on skin thrush or yeast on the skin in this article. I have your feminopathy course, it says for diaper rash use Hepar Sulph 200 EOD. You didn’t clarify if this includes yeast infections in the folds of the diaper region. I’m assuming not? Ive been elbow deep in my repertory trying to verify it and am at a bit of a loss. I really hope you do a blog post on diaper rashes or specifically diaper yeast infections as they are SO common today. Especially as antibiotics are so heavily pushed on moms. I remember my first pregnancy and how they had me on some crazy antibiotics! They however scare you to do it or watch or your baby will die. So what does a loving mother do? She takes them! I do think diaper rashes can be a gateway drug either way! For introducing the amazing properties of homeopathy and what they can do for you and your baby! Or you fall into the black hole of my baby has a terrible diaper rash they tell you to try antifungal or steriods and then your sweet baby has drug induced reactions or ezcema etc etc. You know how the story goes! I understand you want us to learn and take these courses! For those of us who have taken courses or are already committed to homeopathy this makes sense. If we want to convert the world to these amazing medicines and heal our familes I really think covering this subject would be so beneficial!! Ive tried a number of yeast on skin remedies, Graphite 6, Merc Sol 200, Im about to try Arsenicum 200c. Ive seen that in a comment about fungal patches on the skin. Perhaps that doesnt apply though to folds of skin, like behind the ears or knees or neck etc. I know its organ specific. Any help pointing in the right direction would be very welcome! Also if we buy a course and plan to buy more is there a way to save money like discount codes?

Have you read up on Hepar sulph in a materia medica such as Robin Murphy’s to see if it covers the symptoms you’re working with? Not always, but often in homeopathy we needn’t know the microorganism at play, only the area of the body and symptoms.
Thank you for the subject suggestion, Kassandra.

  11. I actually have the Boerickes materia medica and repertory. You used to recommend this one, but do you think the other one is more accessible(I have to google every other word it feels like.)
I went through the whole list in the back of my repertory for “skin eruptions; moist, humid”. However nothing matches perfectly. I begin to wonder if his skin rashes are medically induced? So if I was on a steroid when he was a week old (I had a severe lung/asthma flare up and only had 18% function of my lungs so I couldn’t breathe) could his rash be from the steroid?? Actually I’m pretty sure it is! How would you proceed? I’ve given him camphor after every remedy so far, as all the remedies have aggrivated the rash and spread to a new skin fold! Is there homeopathy from a medication induced condition? I know you’ve recommended Nux vomica 200 for things like that.. hmm I might try that next! So again please clarify the best repertoiry! Or perhaps I’ve tried the right remedy in the wrong way.. Is it possible to aggravate a condition if the dosing is improper? The graphites still matches his condition almost to the letter! But I wonder if I made it worse by the wrong dose (I tried 30, than 200, than 6.)

The repertory I use and teach to my Academy students is the 4th edition of Robin Murphy’s Meta Repertory.
Do you have the Banerji Protocol book? There is a protocol in it with a specific for drug induced dermatitis.
And do you have my online course titled Skin, The Ugly Truth?
If you feel this is too much to take on at this time, you might want to work with one of the graduates from my Mastery program.
Should that be the case go to FindAPracticalHomeopath.com and choose from those who have fulfilled the Mastery program.
